Conclusions of a Life Online

As I transition into the next phase of my life, I would like to share some conclusions. Most, from my life in webcam chatrooms.

A few years back, wanting a website in my name, I thought a blog would be a good way of expressing my mind - my self. I knew it was kind of old fashioned, even back then, but saw no other way to suit my taste. I mixed up YouTube videos with my posts, my own narration, and all in all it was nice.

A few months back, as evident by my lack of posting schedule, I stopped. And instead, I'm now posting Tweets, on Twitter! Hardly the same, but the format is attractive; an easier connection to people. And it does not feel censored as much as Facebook.

My Twitter is on the right, if you are curious. Follow me.

Sometimes it's quiet, and sometimes there are lots of people.

I have moderated and run webcam chatrooms for several years, now. I have seen an endless stream of random men, of all creeds, showing unwelcome penises. I have seen a percentage, albeit much lower, of random women showing vaginas and-or breasts. Both sexes would play with them, until banning - for transgression against the website rules, which do not allow nudity.

I have met & suffered many psychopaths that would harass myself, or others, on a semi-regular basis. Spam messages, threats, information leaking, and anything imaginable that would bother a person. Luckily, I live in a non-English speaking country, where most botherers can't reach me. My attentiveness and chat-robot making skills defend me well.

Through the years, I have "hosted" many guests in my chatrooms. Some for short periods, some for long - even years, even long years. None were as steady as me, outside of my own several month vacation, of recent. Even those I had trusted further, and had the impression that they would stick around, eventually left; for a variety of reasons, from work, school, to the girlfriend getting jealous.

As a dedicated and caring person, who prefers to remain excited & positive in my daily life, I have had many disappointments. I get used to it, but it is never easy. It did, however, teach me about patience, the value of my efforts, and about people. What types of people are out there. Their motivations. How I am seen by others. And what I should expect.

All in all, a lot of great experiences, a varying level of friendships - some of whom I have met offline, and excellent lessons and growth on my part.

Vaporware Is A E S T H E T I C 4 1 1 Y Amusing

I got inspired from vaporwave memes, to make this tiny script. It is 6MB, it is clean - no virus or malware or anything. I programmed it myself, using Python, and then compiled it. CLEAN. Also, Google Drive automatically scans files for viruses under 20mb.

My Foot!

Listen to this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

I just came back to Israel, from about four months of travel, vagabonding mostly in Canada, and a bit in Western Europe. I have never been to Canada before, so I thought it a suitable destination. Maybe I would find a home there. Or company. Or interest. Anything.

I seriously love my "FeelTheWorld" Z-Trek sandals! It's almost like walking barefoot.
(Painful, for the novitiate!)

As always, I wanted to test my idea[l]s hardcore, so I went out with no sleeping bag, no tent, "FeelTheWorld" sandals with thin flexible soles, and an uncomfortable small backpack. After a couple of weeks, I spent almost every night outside. Eventually, not finding feather-down pants, I did buy a sleeping bag. Nights were cold, too often. But, I never gave up on my feet!

*sigh* Refreshing. Fishies nibbling at my legs. :3

My first days outside, walking cheerfully for endless hours, every day, taught me the difference between daily fitness walks and actual walking. My feet were sore, bleeding, slowly callusing, and quickly became unusable. I walked for a few days, then had a few days rest, in a hostel.

Eventually however, my feet did get used to days of walking. Marches. With carried weight. The calluses healed, the pain faded - or my endurance lasted longer hours, and I got tougher. The most primal, basic function of a Human, or any land-loving animal, was gained! I could walk freely, almost anywhere. [Walking long stretches on stones, like big pebbles, was too difficult and highly painful - but I am sure I will get used to it.]

Resting and cleaning, in the morning, next to a small waterfall in the valley.

Another issue I had was exposure to the elements; sun, wind, temperature, bugs, people, noise, dangers. Mostly the sun and wind, though. My body was not used to being exposed for whole days and long weeks! It gave me fatigue and irritation, sometimes bordering on distress. Again, with time I did get used to it, more so than before; although I still sought out shade and wind-blocks.

These issues, and my growing mastery of them, got me to consider roleplaying and virtual games. They do not expose us to the elements. Walking a virtual world is easy and boring. Walking the Earth is difficult and challenging, at the best of times. To walk some places is nigh impossible! Try walking through bush, a thick forest with thorny vines, or a stretch of thorns. Not to mention most places are not level. Climbing does feel!

The library's carpet, in North London, sure was agreeable! :D

So, in conclusion, at least one of the lessons I learned from this trip - do not be afraid of your environment. Get used to it. Feel comfortable in it, as much as possible. Life is not only about feeling comfortable in your own skin; it's also about feeling comfortable in your own space.

And virtual games could learn the lesson, too. Somehow.

Ordered Code Versus Efficient Code

Listen to this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

The less I say in a single short phrase, the more meaning I pass with less effort. This is also true about coding computer software & websites. Commands can be passed in a simple, very readable fashion, similar to how we would talk to another person.

Or, commands can be passed in sophisticated, complex, and convoluted ways, which logically give the same results. But these complex methods, while more efficient for a computer, are much harder for a human to follow and figure out.

Making voxels with colors, lights, and different selection modes.

I have spent the last few months working on a new project in Node.js, using a front-end library for WebGL, called THREE.js. I am creating a 3D virtual world that uses voxels - 3d particles, usually cubes, for all its objects.

Two choices were in front of me: One, put a keyboard key-press event where it happens, which would be efficient. Two, put the event in a fast loop, where all events are checked at a rate of sixty frames per second, which is not efficient, but very readable and orderly.

When checking the event in the fast loop, I use an IF statement that must be passed, in order to execute anything else. Not surprisingly, for a computer this is insignificant effort, so the performance is not impacted, at all.

If performance would be impacted, then I would choose efficiency over readability. But as long as it is not, then readability is always my priority. If you cannot quickly read through it, then it is too complicated to be practical!

Spitting At Kids

Listen to this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

A new generation should speak up the truth
Not just lyrics and rhyme, or beats and moves
When you speak of reason, method, and proof
Minds, not just hearts, will be moved

Make a statement in life,
No wait, statements in wrote
And find me a Youtube to watch,
Instead of the rhetoric they talk

'Cause I wanna know what it means
When a girl is fallacious
No, not sucking dick,
But just sayin' nonsense

I don't think school teaches that,
Or else people would notice
That rappers don't say
What's evident for us

Methodically faulty and follows to nothing,
Is an old generation of spitting and popping
It's time we talked real - not guns and police, or deals and regrets,
but arguments that we'd never fuckin' forget.

From poetry to rap.

A Free Reading From Wattpad

Listen to my reading in MP3 Audio.

I finished a short & fun reading of a short-story, in the "popular" section of Wattpad; a website for independent authors. Even though it is mostly filled with sub-par stories, there is the rare gem to be found!

Maybe find them in Ireland?!

And so, I give to you, Of Tall People and Small People (original text) by Alice Pierce.

By the way, it is a children's story.

My New Domain Name

After about a year of using the name James as my online alias in chat-rooms, I have realized that it works much better than my Hebrew name. I never liked my previous name, but I could never figure out what to replace it with.

Now, James happened by chance. Any random name would do, and it was simple and accessible, and just uncommon enough in the chat.

I use their domain services, which are working fine.

So, with a more western name in tow, I have moved to this new domain!   JamesKoss.com

All previous links should still work. Everything should work the same, really. And all pages should redirect to the new domain. Eventually, the old domain will die-off, so make sure you bookmark the new domain, instead!

Victims of the Internet

Download this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

You know who you are
Lingering in corners
Tweeting in the shower
In your head

4Chan makes you suffer
Facebook turns you on
You are the victims of the net
That grabs us all

Click the pic to see me read the poem!~

A bagful of a pill
Depression is your ill
Lusting for the click
That makes the trick

And you tick...
Victims of the net
Absurd what you forget
Your life is turning bleak

Will you have... no regret?

An Attachable Webcam Lens

It is not a widely known trick that all cameras, that means webcams and cell-phone cameras as well, can change their attributes with an extra lens. Yes! Just like a normal photography camera.

I am now very much enjoying a cheap & effective, and easy to setup, 0.67X wide-angle lens on my Logitech C310 webcam. It lets me locate the webcam close-up, yet show a nice wide view of my self and my surroundings. It uses a sticky circle part, which holds the lens itself with magnetic force. Perfect.

Click the image to see the item on eBay.

Very nice. Very recommended.

The Tease

Download this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

People can tease the basic needs in others, and create a strong emotional pressure. Often, with little effort.

Underneath the intricate thinking and reasoning of the Human mind, there is an impulse-driven mechanism that demands obedience. We get tired and fall asleep, we get hungry and eat, and we get horny and lust.

Yes, please don't tease, if you won't please.

I have recently had two instances of girls teasing me, either to enjoy my company, or to use me for their own personal interest.

The first appeared friendly enough. I liked her vibe, and decided to send her a personal message. We started talking, sharing a bit about ourselfs. However, she would also regularly tease me, and others, saying things like, "hey baby," and, "I love you," along with other catch-phrases and cutsie poses. When I asked to get more personal, she declined, saying she is not interested in "an online relationship", or mixing that chat with her personal life.

Not surprisingly, I later learned, from noticing her behavior and asking questions, that the reasons she gave me were lies - and did not actually apply to everyone. She did indeed become more intimate with other guys from the chat. And that she has a record of guys "just falling for her, for no reason." Yeah...

The second girl was also nice enough, at first. I actually did not have much interest in her, until she asked me to see if I can find more information about her online; to see how vulnerable she is to hackers. This, being quite a task, hinted to me that she is interested in me finding her out. Like a game. So, I did, and later on I found her Skype, and we got talking.

It was soon after that she asked me another such favor, to do some employer's long online quiz, to see how her results compared to mine. I thought to myself that such a personal and tedious request could only show very personal interest in me; although I did make a deal with her, that if I did it, then she would send me a gift by post. :-D

And yet again, when I asked to clarify out relationship, she insisted that it is nothing but being friends. I pointed out her unusual requests, and she appeared surprised that I saw things that way. She apologized... only to continue teasing, making requests, and eventually lie about me to a friend, and put me in a bad light. Yeah...

A tease will display sexuality, and cause a yearning lust in potential mates. This yearning makes others become increasingly interested in the tease, wanting to make a good impression.

At this point you might think, "What's so wrong with that?", or, "Are you calling me a slut?"

A tease and a slut are two different things. A slut actually follows through on his or her teasing! A tease however, while being sexually explicit, and even friendly and intimate, will never gratify those sexual needs.

And that is why a tease is so much worse! You might hate a slut for "using" you, sexually, but you will not feel the emotional compulsion that teasing brings. A slut will be straightforward, and let you off. A tease will continue, even after clarifying that you will not be getting anything!... Anything but emotional abuse, that is.

You will continue to suffer the oppression of strong feelings and interest towards a person that does not feel the same. Often, they will not even care about you, other than as entertainment. And they do so, the tease, because it is a tool that lets them force you, manipulate you into "liking them", or rather, giving them the attention they want.

If you are reading this, realizing that you do tease others, then stop that!

It is inconsiderate to manipulate other people's feelings, if you actually want to be friends with them. Friends let their friends choose; they do not put emotional pressure - guilt, tease, shame, and so on - on them, for personal benefit. Only tease when you are actually willing to commit, and follow through sexually. Be honest.

And if you are a victim of sexual manipulation - by a tease, then get the fuck away from that person. Right now!

Sadly, there is no way to stop feeling. We are designed to feel, and respond to attractions. Even if you can withhold yourself, it takes effort, and eventually drains on your emotional reserve. It is just not worth it.

I once heard the wise phrase, "Do not play a losing game." You have nothing to gain from tolerating a tease, just as you have nothing to gain from tolerating any other form of abuse. A tease is not your friend. If they were, they would have cared and been considerate enough to avoid triggering you emotionally, on a regular basis, in a way that does not match their own intentions.

Keep your eyes open, and do not hesitate to catch a tease in action, and tell them off!

What Is Love?

Download this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

Love is when you're good
To yourself
To a friend
To your girl or guy
To the stranger who's alive
Or the stranger that'll die

It's a gesture, a hint
A word or a smile
It's something that you give
And you give it for a while
Because you really want to
And not because you're told
Love is when you're good
Even when it's old

A kid thinks love
Is nothing but a sham
A sexy misdirection
To get out of a jam
But loving isn't one thing
Not sex, cash, nor a pic
Love is when you're doing
Not always knowing what it means

And if you've ever wondered
Am I really loving this?
Then you must be smarter
To know something's amiss
In life it ain't just one thing
It's a myriad of thing
Love is when you're good
And being good is everything.

Cracking Tinychat

Download this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

For about a year now, I have been enjoying the online service called Tinychat. It is a place where random people can create virtual rooms, and chat on camera, with a microphone, and by text.

Looks a bit different...

Their service is provided through a Flash client that handles all the technicalities. Naturally, people became curious, wanting to hack into the service, for fun. It becomes a sort of game, where one hacker would annoy another person's room, by figuring out which data packets do what, and replicating or changing them; spamming the other room with messages.

Other than spamming for fun and challenge, users figured out they could create bots. Bots are applications that mimic an actual user, but usually only to the extent that they obey another. So, if only moderators could play videos in the room, now a user with access to the bot can also play videos.

This sort of delegation lets rooms become more friendly and interactive, by reducing the workload of the moderators. The bot itself works by using RTMP and AMF libraries; the former to make the streaming connection, and the latter to encode & decode the data packets.

I have had the pleasure of working with existing PHP and Python bots, and editing them for increased functionality. I used Wireshark, filtered for the room's IP address, and sniffed out the command packets. It felt like the internet should be; a wild place, full of opportunities and troubles, inhabited by curious lively individuals.

I wanted to share all of this, in summary, with you. I have just had a good couple of weeks, coding and cracking code, enjoying the results with my friends there. I will leave you with a reference list, for those who are curious about the details. ;-)

https://www.wireshark.org/
Use the Find option, to locate commands or names. Here's a few examples of filters:
ip.addr == 209.212.144.103
ip.dst == 209.212.144.117
!(ip.dst == 209.212.144.105) && frame.cap_len < 200 && !(frame.cap_len == 54)

http://pastebin.com/Aht0r1V9
An older semi-functional bot in Python, that I found while googling around. It's quite a big hint.

Reviewing Murray Rothbard's FOR A NEW LIBERTY

Download this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

The book was a disappointing read. He devalued the argument from morality, calling the NAP "recognized rights", which literally means nothing.

Click above to read more about Frederic Bastiat.

He also used an array of, "Look at how well they are doing," examples. Meaningless finger-pointing, without an actual argument, and sometimes even at horrid cultures - such as the Mormons. ><

And hours of talk about the failures of the State isn't an argument, either!

It is useful to understand the evils of the State, in order to fend it off. Yes. But an entire book entailing each horror and act of ignorance, does not disqualify Statism; there is no measurement of a system being insufficient. We can only measure whether a system is logically consistent, and whether it actually represents its users - the people.

Sadly, seeing the ignorance & violence in society today, I am hard pressed to claim that contemporary Statist society does not, in actuality, represent the people. A victim is only a victim, until they start willingly cooperate with & support their violator. Then, they the victims become violators, too.

My New Computer Is So Awesome

At ~$700, I got a new Intel I3 3.6ghz computer, with 8gb DDR3 1600mhz RAM, and a quick & silent 128gb SSD. After deliberating, I added to the package the expensive-but-powerful Asus GTX 750 OC GPU, so everything runs super smooth!

It lives inside drawers.

And it's silent as fuck.

It did take some adjustments and sawing, though.

Defeating Room Reverb (Echo)

So, I have shown my home "studio" before, a few times. With each step, things improve, sound better, and are more comfortable. But, even though I had good reverb reduction, I never quite managed to completely remove it.

Until now.

All folded up.
I ran some tests, and found that most of my reverb came from the top and sides, rather than from behind me. So, using bamboo poles connected to the top shelf, I hung thick extra blankets that I had.

Bamboo pole, hidden under blankets.

First, I drop the two side curtains.
I got the idea for using towels from guys online, who wrote about it. Large towels are more accessible for me, than large blankets. Saves me cash. Also, their thickness is undoubted! They mute jumping echoes!

I cut a slit into the side towel, so the microphone and arm-stand can go through it. It is kept closed with a simple clip.

Then, I just unfold the top towel, and I'm done!
I used the bottom part of the top towel, to close the top of my screen area, where I have another shelf. I have simple pillows behind the screen, to block echo from the front, which is critical.

Side view.

Inside view.

As you can see, it is a simple and effective solution. It is also very comfortable! And quick to fold and unfold; between ten to twenty seconds. I did have the bamboo poles bulge further than the desk, by about 10 centimeters, or 4 inches, so that I get good coverage.

The Moral Guide 2014

I would like to experiment, and write down a clear and practical guide for good behavior. Moral behavior, both positively (generally necessary habits) and negatively (prohibited behavior). A guide that can, periodically, stand as a reference for the moral standards that humanity's best minds have discovered.

Eventually, I plan on giving it a page of its own. For now, here is the index and subtitles, with a little description, for your review.

They had their morality, and we have ours.

Subtitle: To reflect the wisdom of our age, through clear and reasoned guidance.

1. Morality

      1.1 The Non-Aggression Principle
A single core principle that can explain the larger part of our existing and accepted moral rules, such as not to steal or murder.
  1.1.1 Only self-defense justifies force.
  1.1.2 Judging self-defense situations.
This principle is well argued, and exemplified throughout historical and modern times. Our greatest achievements, such as the abolition of slavery, follow hand-in-hand with it.
      1.2 The Ideology of Anarchy
A complimenting ideology that solves the remaining issues in society, where-in coercion is not necessarily applied, by denying the morality of dominating or abusive relationships.
  1.2.1 Authority is always personal.
1.2.2 Responsibility versus Ownership - plan rather than blame.
1.2.3 Partnership versus Service - never obey.
To both explain and solve the error of social hierarchy, the ideology first shows the logic it holds, and then goes to give clear examples of its use.
      1.3 The Pursuit of Wisdom
A moral code that is unchanging, and based on history rather than contemporary evidence, leads to immorality. Moral understanding must always evolve and be fine-tuned, so that it reflects the knowledge and experience of its users.
1.3.1 Why & How to Find Challenges.
An improved morality is the result of facing challenges, and coming out of them the better and wiser. The more varied, unexpected, unknown, and dire the challenge or choice, the better.
2. Practices

      2.1 Exercise
A sickly body is unable to concentrate and reason, to a normal extent. Morality, first and foremost, requires taking care of the self.
  2.1.1 Cardio, strength, and flexibility.
A regularly active person that has full mobility in both resistance and reach, will always feel comfortable in their own body.
      2.2 Self Defense & Arms
Justice is the ability to act on your morality. It is not enough to understand right from wrong, if it is not possible to protect what is right, and fend off what is wrong.
2.2.1 Strategy, Tactics, Evasion - Also see chapter 2.3.4.
  2.2.2 Contact fighting.
2.2.3 Short range weapons, long range weapons, and projectiles.
Through analyzing situations, planning ahead, and enjoying advanced equipment, anyone can defend themselves efficiently.
      2.3 Discussion
Open debate and freedom of speech are tenants of the modern age. Without those, progress is slowed, and conflict increases.
  2.3.1 Personal needs.
  2.3.2 Community needs.
  2.3.3 Planning for goals.
  2.3.4 Political negotiations - the social-economical front.
Discussions are intentionally organised, so that debate does not turn into harmful gossip. When people's thoughts are acknowledged, it is important to plan on how to address them. Finally, it is also important to acknowledge and address outside issues.
3. Community

      3.1 Events

3.1.1 Organizing people for coordinated action.
Pre-defined events give people access into initiatives that would otherwise be private. This way anyone can contribute to others, without the normally necessary personal connection.
      3.2 Gatherings

  3.2.1 Bonding different communities.
It is impossible to make a disconnection between communities. Even if the distance may be far and wide, there will always be both positive and negative influences. It is important to seek the positive.
      3.3 Support

3.3.1 From public shelters to friend circles.
Planning and effort are limited, and that is why we have backups. Public spaces help, when a home is lost. Reliable friend circles, where responsibility is shared voluntarily, help when personal ability is diminished through injury or disease.

Recording Studio: The Next Level!

I want to describe the latest additions & editions to my home studio, even though I have already shared these photos on my FB and G+ accounts.

I have designed my reverb-cancelling booth, using strings and bamboo poles. This gives it a comfortable shape, and lets me roll the cloth up quickly, when I am not recording. The reverb-cancellation itself is great!

My new Audio Technica AT2035 large-diaphragm condenser microphone, as purchased from eBay. What a brilliant device! Sounds so good and lively, without any problems. No sibilance. No noise. Just voice.

And my new Focusrite iTrack Solo usb audio interface, which brings the audio into my computer clearly and quickly, as purchased from Amazon. No lag. No noise. Very comfortable & hardy design. I also play everything through it, now, because it is a sound card, so my output audio is crisp clear, as well!

Accessible and sturdy connections and controls.

Freedomain Radio by Stefan Molyneux

Download this blogcast in MP3 Audio.

Stefan is the only person I know that is laying down, for all of us, a modern-day philosophical foundation, derived from the best works of thought of previous generations. And he also practices what he preaches!

The core of his ideology takes from Anarchism, and the practical value of Capitalism. On the one hand, no person must ever be forced against their will - other than in self-defense, and on the other hand, the best approach to financial success is through free & voluntary trade.

The 47 year-old Canadian host of Freedomain Radio.

Surprisingly, even now, almost ten years into the existence of the podcast, Stefan only has three team members: Mike, James, and Stoyan. This leads me to think that the endeavor, while beneficial to millions of viewers, and true in its' ideology, is an impossible mission.

There is much evidence to say that almost the entirety of his audience treat the show solely as entertainment. The show is run by donations, at an estimated request of $0.5 a podcast, and even BitCoin is accepted.

However, it appears that less than one-percent of the audience actually donate anything. At all. Even much less than one-percent, if I have the right impression.

Ironically, Stefan, similarly to Dr. Phil, also puts emphasis on achievement through work; something he had experienced extensively in his own life. This goes in stark contrast to the likelihood that most of his audience are either living on welfare, or like many young adults in dysfunctional economies, living through their parents' funding.

Why is the Freedomain Radio so important?

Stefan is a radio-show host, author, and public-media spokesperson. He addresses & practices topics such as BitCoin, Relationships, Morality, and Liberty.

Renowned for talk shows and call-in shows.

I have personally enjoyed a better understanding of these topics, by being a listener and participating community member. The amount of positive feedback from listeners is vast, so there is no doubt that this is a good endeavor.

So, how come Stefan does not grow his business?

The show is not a charity! However, its' current business-model is a sort of honesty box. Sadly, most people are not honest, even if they want to be, and so this strategy is too futuristic - if we assume future people to be more honest.

I look at history, contemporary societies, and modern advancement, and intuit that only successful business-models actually make a positive long lasting impact. Charismatic and socially-adored people, who have not managed to also go beyond normal finances, usually impact a generation, and then lose relevance; because people aren't satisfied with ideologies, only.

People want success. Moral success is part of it, but morality is meaningless without sustenance & prosperity. A true leader leads on all accounts; moral and economic.

I would guess that Stefan will eventually expand his business model to include the [paid] training of more philosophers, who can mimic his success, and continue the cycle of benefit to themselves, and to their audiences.

I hope he does that earlier, rather than later.
